The 7 Biggest Computer Myths That Just Won't Die

Should you shut your computer down every night? Can Macs get viruses? Let's bust seven of the biggest computer myths I still hear every week.

Person using a laptop surrounded by question marks and technology symbols representing common computer myths.

The 7 Biggest Computer Myths That Just Won't Die

I've worked with computers for more than 25 years.

During that time I've heard the same advice repeated over and over again.

Some of it was true twenty years ago.

Some of it was never true.

Let's separate fact from fiction.

Myth 1: You Must Shut Your Computer Down Every Night

Reality: Not necessarily.

Modern computers are designed to sleep efficiently and wake up almost instantly.

If you use your computer every day, putting it to sleep is perfectly fine.

I still recommend restarting your computer once every week or two so Windows can finish updates and clear temporary issues.

Myth 2: Macs Can't Get Viruses

Reality: They absolutely can.

While Macs have excellent built-in security, they are not immune to malware or scams.

Cyber criminals target whichever platform gives them the best chance of success.

Myth 3: More Antivirus Programs Means More Protection

Reality: Usually the opposite.

Running multiple antivirus programs often causes conflicts and can actually slow your computer down.

One good security solution is normally all you need.

Myth 4: Deleting Files Makes Your Computer Faster

Reality: Only if your storage is almost full.

Deleting a few photos or documents won't suddenly make your computer run like new.

If your drive is nearly full, however, freeing up space can improve performance.

Myth 5: Incognito Mode Makes You Anonymous

Reality: It doesn't.

Private browsing simply stops your browser saving your history on that device.

Your internet provider, employer or the websites you visit can still see your activity.

Myth 6: You Only Need a Backup If You're a Business

Reality: Home users often have even more valuable files.

Your family photos, videos and personal documents are often impossible to replace.

I've seen too many people learn this lesson the hard way.

Myth 7: My Computer Is Slow Because It's Old

Reality: Age isn't always the problem.

Sometimes a computer only needs a clean-up, an SSD upgrade or additional memory.

I've seen five-year-old computers feel brand new again after a simple upgrade.

Glenn's Tip

Don't believe everything you hear from friends, family or social media.

Technology changes quickly.

Advice that was correct ten years ago may no longer apply today.

If you're unsure, ask someone who works with computers every day.

Final Thoughts

The best technology advice is usually the simplest.

Keep your computer updated.

Use strong passwords.

Back up your important files.

And don't believe every computer myth you hear.

If you're ever unsure, it's always better to ask before a small problem becomes an expensive one.
